What is OLE DB?

Online Linking and Embedding Database (OLE DB) is Microsoft's strategic low-level application program interface (API) for accessing different data sources. OLE DB includes not only the Structured Query Language (SQL) capabilities of the Microsoft-sponsored standard data interface, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), but it also includes access to data other than SQL-based data.

OLE DB Overview

OLE DB is used for accessing different types of data sources stored in a uniform manner. It consists of a set of interfaces implemented using the Component Object Model (COM). Although it was originally designed as a replacement for ODBC, ODBC and JDBC still continue to be the most widely used standards for data access.
