Unify recognized that ODBC was the de facto connectivity standard for opening its Unify DataServer databases to the Windows desktop and that JDBC was the preferred standard for Web-based data access. Unify needed a standards-based data access solution that would provide client/server connectivity for its Unify DataServer database line. Having already used SimbaEngine SDK to build an ODBC driver for Unify DataServer ELS, Unify was able to use its familiarity with SimbaEngine SDK to build ODBC drivers for the remaining databases in the Unify DataServer line. Unify DBIntegrator is a server-based data access solution featuring a thin client/server architecture for flexible deployment and high performance connectivity to Unify DataServer. The multi-tier architecture provides a thin, universal ODBC and JDBC client on the desktop, which communicates over LAN, WAN or the Internet with the DBIntegrator server. Unify ODBC drivers then pass the translated SQL statements to the database server for processing. In this way, ODBC-compliant applications can have connections to multiple Unify DataServer databases, or a combination of Unify DataServer and PC databases. No source code or database changes are required.
The thin ODBC and JDBC desktop clients can be installed from a central server, greatly simplifying driver deployment, as there is no need to visit the desktop. DBIntegrator uses a proprietary network transport layer to reduce network traffic by compressing data, combining database calls, and using pre-fetch data routines to provide for fast connectivity, even over high latency networks like the Internet. Database queries and operations are performed on the DBIntegrator server, rather than on the desktop, resulting in high performance. In addition, each component is optimized to use the minimum amount of memory while providing the best possible performance.
Simba continues to support Unify DBIntegrator and provides ongoing upgrades.
